Concert for Trombone in three movements (Allegro giusto – Lento, ben ritmato – Allegro moderato) composed by the famous italian composer in 1966. It's one of the most played trombone concertos in the world and it already belongs to every “classical” trombonists repertory. This is the first time the piece has been transcribed for trombone soloist and wind band.

Frontiere is a meditative piece with dense instrumental colors, sometimes dark, sometimes pleasantly bright.
It tries to symbolize, with its cyclical form, a journey through thematic ideas that, from simple filler or secondary counterpoint, become protagonists and reveal their hidden potential as if, coming out of nowhere, they succeed in crossing a border (frontiera) which allows them to live in their own light.
Then the piece ends as it started, as if, after having explored new territories, desires to return to its own origins, where it all began.

The concert piece was composed for the First National Composition Competition for Wind Orchestra Palatucci in 2010, obtaining the second prize (first prize not awarded). The composition is inspired by the analogy perceived between the “salvation”, understood in a laical way, of the myth of Orpheus – who with his music corrupts the god of the underworld to bring his beloved back to life – and the story of the Chief of Police of city of Fiume who allowed the salvation of a multitude of Jews destined to suffer the murderous Nazi fury. Many instruments stand out as solists and in their extreme registers.

Concert for alto saxophone, dedicated to Gabriele Francioli. In four movements: the first, with a double theme, the soloist, after the introductive cadence, “converses” with the band, by alternating musical phrases; the second is a tango, built on a rhythmic element of the previous movement; the third, the slow movement of the piece, in which the saxophone gradually gains the upper hand, subsequently becoming the undisputed protagonist in the finale “Blues”, which also includes a section of improvisation.

Serendipity is a term coined by the English writer Horace Walpole (1717-1797) to indicate the ability to discover at random something unexpected that has nothing to do with what you were looking for.
The name comes from a legend according to which the Sultan of Serendip (ancient Arabic name of the island of Ceylon), leaves home in search of gold. After travelling across mountains and valleys and finding no gold, he discovers an excellent quality of tea which turns out to be more valuable than gold.
Or just think of Christopher Columbus who in 1492 discovered the American continent while searching for a shorter route to India.
The composer Carlo Pirola with SERENDIPITY took on this sense of adventure, that is to discover an unexpected musical idea, especially while searching for another one. A continuous surprise that only music can achieve.
In this original composition for band, one captures moments of research, and finally finds out that they created a new musical idea which, in turn comes back and originates new ideas which will be needed to create other ones, and so on.
It's a musical adventure in which the value of the experiences does not match the original expectations, but that eventually puts everything in order; a piece that teaches us to love and accept life, because, even though it is set and lived to reach certain milestones, it will have pleasant surprises in store for us.
