  • Preghiera

    ,

Preghiera (Prayer) ideally reflects the contrast and mixture of those thoughts and sentiments (the gentleness of the soul and the eternal doubts which often “tempt” it) which, in this music, express themselves both through the contrast of the two main and distinct thematic areas, and with their perfect union and synthesis, where one theme enters into the other in an ideal dialogue of contrasts which sees the meditative and serene theme prevail in the end and, gently repeating itself, leads to a delicate conclusion.

The concert piece was composed for the First National Composition Competition for Wind Orchestra Palatucci in 2010, obtaining the second prize (first prize not awarded). The composition is inspired by the analogy perceived between the “salvation”, understood in a laical way,  of the myth of Orpheus – who with his music corrupts the god of the underworld to bring his beloved back to life – and the story of the Chief of Police of city of Fiume who allowed the salvation of a multitude of Jews destined to suffer the murderous Nazi fury. Many instruments stand out as solists and in their extreme registers.

  • Adele

    ,

March with an effectively brilliant character. However, it has some vaguely melancholic features: on the one side the joy for the birth of the composer's first child (Adele), on the other the feeling of the memory of his deceased grandmother, also named Adele.

  • Ciccì

    ,

The march was composed in honor of the Fanfara della Legione Allievi Carabinieri in Rome and its director M° Danilo Di Silvestro. Musically the dedication translates into a characteristic introduction – in the repeat of the “trio” – of the opening theme of La Fedelissima (The Faithful), the ordinance march of the Carabinieri composed by Luigi Cirinei.

  • I Gemelli

    ,

The brilliant march I Gemelli (the twins) is a pleasant and bright piece, conceived by the composer as a tribute to two friends who are trumpet playing twins. The mood is quiet and the gait is fluid and appealing. Towards the end of the trio we find an optional trumpet duet that can highlight the skills of the two best trumpet players in the band.

  • Masino

    ,

In memory of the composer's father Tommaso (nicknamed Masino as a child), who died prematurely, and the fact that he was a good musician and a fervent admirer of music for band, were the reasons that lead to the composition of this lovely march. The music is reminiscent of the joyful festivals which Masino always participated in, and in the “trio” the euphonium, his instrument, plays a melody in an accompanying style typical of a  symphonic march.

  • Prima Marcia

    ,

It is the first march written by the composer after having just graduated, and is ready to be performed. After a brief introduction, where scales and trills in the woodwinds interwine with an interesting romantic counter theme of  the trumpets and basses, we hear a simple theme based on the arpeggio of the triad of the initial key.

Concert for alto saxophone, dedicated to Gabriele Francioli. In four movements: the first, with a double theme, the soloist, after the introductive cadence, “converses” with the band, by alternating musical phrases; the second is a tango, built on a rhythmic element of the previous movement; the third, the slow movement of the piece, in which the saxophone gradually gains the upper hand, subsequently becoming the undisputed protagonist in the finale “Blues”, which also includes a section of improvisation.

  • Alla scoperta del nuovo mondo

    ,

An original and descriptive piece which also introduces themes from Antonín Dvořák's New World Symphony, easily adatped for band. This choice comes from the fact that the Czech composer visited the United States in the late 1800s. He travelled widely and became acquainted with the music of Afro-Americans and native Indians, aspects which influenced his compositions insomuch that they were included in his famous New World Symphony. Dvořák managed to create a symphonic-classical style influenced by the assimilation of popular American melodies. There are many beautiful melodies in the New World Symphony, and our purpose is to make them known to instrumental groups so they can have the opportunity to play them in an easy and pleasant way

  • Serendipity

    ,

Serendipity is a term coined by the English writer Horace Walpole (1717-1797) to indicate the ability to discover at random something unexpected that has nothing to do with what you were looking for.

The name comes from a legend according to which the Sultan of Serendip (ancient Arabic name of the island of Ceylon), leaves home in search of gold. After travelling across mountains and valleys and finding no gold, he discovers an excellent quality of tea which turns out to be more valuable than gold.
Or just think of Christopher Columbus who in 1492 discovered the American continent while searching for a shorter route to India.

The composer Carlo Pirola with SERENDIPITY took on this sense of adventure, that is to discover an unexpected musical idea, especially while searching for another one. A continuous surprise that only music can achieve.

In this original composition for band, one captures moments of research, and finally finds out that they created a new musical idea which, in turn comes back and originates new ideas which will be needed to create other ones, and so on.
It's a musical adventure in which the value of the experiences does not match the original expectations, but that eventually puts everything in order; a piece that teaches us to love and accept life, because, even though it is set and lived to reach certain milestones, it will have pleasant surprises in store for us.

  • Verso l’oriente

    ,

This composition for band, largely original, traces the places and encounters along the Silk Road leading to China that characterized the most important experiences of Marco Polo's life: the Gobi desert, the Yellow River, the Great Wall of China, the entrance in the city of Shangdu, trading with merchants, the encounter with Kublai Khan, the oriental dances in the court life, the meditative aspect of a Buddhist temple and in the garden of the Happy Men, the rites of the Prohibited City and imperial honors which were reserved for Marco Polo by the Great Khan of Beijing.

The musical construction is entrusted to particular scales from which the melodies and harmonies are inspired to create an atmosphere in the Oriental tradition.

The discursive spirit of the architectural lines moves easily between the modern chromaticism and a rhythmic writing that generates movements of minimalist origin.
Well-known themes from the opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini are deliberately woven into the piece: a significant tribute to the adventurous feats of the Italian traveler in ancient China. The pieces by Puccini are transcribed in an easy and accessible way for performance by a wind band.

Here are some various musical passages:
    Towards Silk Road.
The caravan of the camel drivers
The arrival to the Oriental City
The life and dance of theCourt(Allegretto giocoso of Turandot)
    The encounter with the merchants
    In a Chinese market
“Gira la cote” from Turandot…..sharpening of the knives
    Beijing the forbidden City
In the garden of the happy men: the success of the voyage of Marco Polo
    (Themes and ending from Turandot)
